A blast from the past, on this date 40 years ago! – A recollection of great memories for the Purple and Gold by Andrew Grene.

🟣🟡🏑 A blast from the past, on this date 40 years ago!

A Snippet from the Limerick Leader following the great win

Our club minor U18 hurling team with 3 players from neighbouring Fedamore, played in the East cup and championship in centenary year 1984. Mostly up to that time, players from the club played minor with other local sides, as our numbers were small. All clubs played in one grade as there was no A & B, and competitions were knockout.

In the cup we beat South Liberties before losing to Caherline in the semi final. Then in the championship we beat Kilteely/Dromkeen in Kilteely in the first round.

Next we had a very important challenge game away to Emly, which brought the side on a lot. This led to our memorable day, Sunday July 1st. We were outsiders playing Doon in the semi final, who were always very strong in this grade. This game was played in Caherconlish and it was refereed by Willie Hayes of Pallasgreen. For this game we were without Seánie Enright, who was playing with the Fedamore senior team on the same afternoon.

On a never to be forgotten day our side did the purple & gold proud, giving a super display and won on a 2-14 to 1-05 scoreline. It was a victory that sowed a lot of fruitful seeds for the club in the following years. For the record the Selectors & back room team – Rodgie O’Riordan, Nicholas Grene (senior), Brendan Crehan, Mike Weekes, Bud Leonard, Tim Wilkinson & Ned Ryan. Panel of players- Andrew Grene (goalie), John Crehan, Austin O’Neill, Bernard Daly, John O’Donovan, Paudie Ryan, Eamonn “Sonny” Ryan (at 14 he was the youngest on the panel), Charlie O’Neill (captain), James Prenderville (Fedamore), Joey Browne, Tom Browne, John Whyte, Ken Tierney, Liam Haigney (Fedamore), Kieran Kerins, Denis Crehan, Ailbe Tierney, Jossy O’Riordan, Shane Warren.

Unfortunately we were minus 2 players for the East Final and were beaten by a strong Murroe Boher side in Caherconlish. Again short a few regulars NCW were too good for us in the county quarter final, which was another first for the club, as this game was played in the Gaelic Grounds.

Great memories for everyone involved!

Many thanks to Andrew Grene for this great account of events from yesteryear

Here’s hoping our Limerick hurlers will do a similar number to another red & white clad team in Croker on Sunday 🇳🇬
